Quick Answer
The best time to visit the Sahara Desert in Morocco is generally October through April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant for camel trekking and evenings are cool but manageable for camping. For Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes, the most balanced months are usually March–April and October–November. Late spring through summer (May–September) brings intense midday heat that makes daytime activity harder, though sunrise and sunset experiences still work well outside the hottest hours.
If you are deciding when to visit Merzouga, spring and autumn usually give you warm days and comfortable evenings. Winter suits travelers who don't mind cold nights, and summer suits those who can plan around the heat.
- Best overall: March–April and October–November.
- Best for camel trekking: the cooler months, though sunrise and sunset rides run in every season — see our camel trekking in Merzouga and Erg Chebbi.
- Best for an overnight desert camp: October to April, with warm layers in winter — see our luxury desert camp in Merzouga.
- Hardest season: June to August, when midday heat is intense.
These are general seasonal patterns, not weather forecasts. Conditions vary from year to year, so check the forecast shortly before you travel.
Merzouga Weather by Season
Merzouga sits on the edge of the Sahara, so much of the year is dry and sunny, but each season feels very different once you are out in the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Here is what to expect, in general terms.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is often the sweet spot: warm days and mild evenings make camel treks and sitting outside at camp comfortable. Wind and blowing sand can happen at this time of year, so a scarf is useful. By May the heat starts to build and conditions begin to feel like summer. March and April are a good choice for a first visit, combining a sunset camel ride with a night at camp.
Summer (June to August)
Summer is very hot during the day. Plan activity around sunrise and sunset, rest during the middle of the day, and carry plenty of water. The desert cools down after dark, which is when summer camp evenings are at their best. If you travel in summer, choose a sunset ride over a midday one.
Autumn (September to November)
September can still be hot, but conditions usually ease through the season. October and November are popular for good reason: the dunes are comfortable again and the evenings are pleasant. Book earlier if your dates are fixed.
Winter (December to February)
Days are generally comfortable, while nights are cold — January is typically the coldest month. It is a good season for trekking and stargazing if you pack warm layers, and early mornings can feel chilly for a sunrise ride (our Sahara packing guide covers what to bring).
Season Comparison at a Glance

| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Very hot by day; the desert cools after dark | Best at sunrise and sunset only | Possible with shade and a flexible schedule; not ideal for everyone | Travelers who can plan around the heat |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | Heat eases through the season; October and November are favorites | Very good, particularly from October | Very comfortable from October | Balanced conditions for a trek and an overnight camp |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Comfortable days, cold nights; January is usually the coldest | Good; midday rides are pleasant, bring layers for early starts | Good with warm layers; nights are cold | Travelers who don't mind cold nights and want clear stargazing |

Which Season Suits Your Trip?
The best time to visit Merzouga depends as much on you as on the calendar. A few rules of thumb:
- First visit or traveling with family: choose March–April or October–November, when heat and cold are both easier to manage.
- If you feel the cold: avoid the coldest nights of December and January, or pick a camp with a private tent, a private bathroom and hot water.
- If you dislike heat: skip June to August and aim for the shoulder months.
- If stargazing or photography is the priority: the cooler months are the most comfortable for staying outside after dark, and sunrise and sunset light is good in every season.
- If summer is your only option: book sunrise and sunset activities, rest at midday, and ask about shade and water at your camp.
October to April: Peak Season
This is when most travelers visit, and for good reason. Daytime temperatures typically sit in a comfortable range for walking, camel trekking, and 4x4 dune driving, while nights are cool enough to enjoy a fire and warm blankets at camp without being uncomfortable. December and January bring the coldest nights of the year — still very doable with proper layering, but worth knowing if you tend to feel the cold. This period also sees the most camp availability booked in advance, so reserving a few weeks ahead is worthwhile if your dates are fixed. School holidays, Christmas and New Year, and Moroccan public holidays tend to be busier, so book earlier for those dates.
May to September: Hot Season
Summer in the Sahara is genuinely hot, with midday temperatures that make extended outdoor activity uncomfortable. That said, camel treks and camp stays are typically scheduled around sunrise and sunset specifically to avoid the harshest hours, and many travelers still visit successfully in summer by adjusting their schedule — resting during the peak heat and being active in the cooler morning and evening windows. If you're traveling in summer, prioritize hydration, sun protection, and a camp with shade.
Is summer too hot to visit the Sahara?
It depends on how you handle heat. Many travelers find the middle of the day too hot for anything but resting, but a sunset ride and a night under the stars can still be memorable. If you are heat-sensitive, or traveling with young children or older relatives, the shoulder months (March–April and October–November) are a safer choice.
Best Time for Camel Trekking in Morocco
Camel treks in Merzouga run around sunrise and sunset in every season, so you can ride at almost any time of year. The cooler months are the most comfortable for longer rides, including a sunset trek to camp and a sunrise trek back. In summer, rides are shorter and timed for the coolest hours. The sunset trek leaves roughly 90 minutes before sunset, so departure times shift with the seasons.
The classic way to ride is a sunset camel trek into the dunes, an overnight stay at camp with dinner and breakfast, and a sunrise ride back. In winter, dress warmly for the early start; in summer, the sunset ride is usually the more comfortable of the two.
You can read more about how a ride works in our first-timer's guide to camel trekking in Merzouga, or see the options on our Merzouga camel trekking page.
Best Time to Stay in a Merzouga Desert Camp
An overnight stay is most comfortable from October to April, with spring and autumn offering the best balance of warm days and mild nights. In winter, nights are cold, so dress in layers even though warm blankets are provided in the tents. If comfort matters, a luxury desert camp in Merzouga with a private bathroom and hot water shower makes cold evenings easier. In summer, choose a camp with shade and plan to be active only in the cooler hours.

Best Months for Stargazing
Stargazing is excellent nearly year-round in Erg Chebbi thanks to minimal light pollution, but the cooler months make it far more comfortable to actually sit outside after dark. Check the moon phase before you travel if stargazing is a priority for you — a new moon or crescent moon gives the darkest skies and the clearest view of the Milky Way, while a full moon (beautiful in its own way) will wash out fainter stars.
Seasonal Events Worth Timing Around
If you're interested in Moroccan culture beyond the desert itself, ask us about regional festivals and market days happening during your travel window — timing can vary year to year, and we're happy to suggest add-ons if something aligns with your trip. Ramadan dates also shift each year, which can change opening hours in towns, so it is worth checking the dates before you book.
