Getting to Merzouga
Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi in southeastern Morocco, roughly a full day's drive from Marrakech or Fes. Most travelers reach it either by joining a multi-day desert tour that includes transport (the most common option, and the one that lets you see the Atlas Mountains and gorges along the way), or by taking a shared or private grand taxi and bus combination from Fes or Er-Rachidia for those planning their own route. There's no train station in Merzouga itself; the nearest rail connections are in Fes or Marrakech, from which road transport takes over.
Where to Stay Before Your Tour
Most travelers spend a night in a Merzouga guesthouse or riad before or after their desert camp stay, both to break up the travel and to have a comfortable base with a shower and reliable Wi-Fi. Many guesthouses are family-run and can arrange the camel trek pickup directly from their door, which simplifies logistics considerably.
Erg Chebbi Dunes
Erg Chebbi is the main reason travelers come to Merzouga — a sea of dunes rising up to around 150 meters, among the tallest in Morocco. It's compact enough to explore thoroughly over one or two nights: 4x4 dune bashing along the western edge, camel trekking into the interior, and sandboarding on some of the steeper slopes near popular camp areas are all common add-ons to a standard desert tour.
What Else to See Around Merzouga
Beyond the dunes themselves, the area around Merzouga has a handful of worthwhile stops: a visit to a local Berber family for tea and conversation, the Khamlia village known for its Gnawa music traditions, and (seasonally) Lake Dayet Srji, a shallow lake near town that attracts flamingos and other birdlife when water levels allow. Most of these can be folded into a half-day loop before or after your camel trek.
Planning Tips
Book your desert camp a few weeks ahead during peak season (October–April) to guarantee availability, especially for deluxe camps. Confirm pickup details with your guesthouse or guide the night before your trek, and keep a light overnight bag separate from your main luggage, since only essentials come with you into the dunes.
