Camel Trekking

Cross the Dunes the Way the Desert Always Has

Sunset, sunrise, and multi-day camel treks through Erg Chebbi, led by guides who have worked with these camels since childhood.

Sunset Trek

The Classic Erg Chebbi Sunset Ride

Our most popular trek departs Merzouga in the late afternoon, timed so your camel caravan reaches the high dunes exactly as the sky turns gold and pink. It's a slow, steady walk — roughly an hour in the saddle — that ends at your desert camp for the night.

  • Departs daily, roughly 90 minutes before sunset
  • Guided by an experienced local camel handler
  • Ends directly at your desert camp for dinner
  • Suitable for beginners — no riding experience needed

Sunrise Trek

Wake Early for the Quiet Ride Back

If you spend the night in a desert camp, the return trek at sunrise is often the most memorable part of the trip. The dunes are cool, the light is soft, and the desert is nearly silent except for the sound of camel bells.

  • Departs before sunrise from your desert camp
  • Roughly 45–60 minutes back to the meeting point
  • Best photography light of the entire trip

Camel Welfare

How We Care for Our Camels

Our camels are worked in short, well-spaced shifts, given regular water and rest stops, and checked daily by their handlers, many of whom have raised these animals from birth. Saddles are padded and fitted to each camel, and treks are paced to the animal's comfort, not the clock.

Trekking FAQ

Camel Trekking Questions

Do I need riding experience? +

Is there a weight or age limit? +
Most travelers of all ages and body types can ride comfortably. Let us know in advance about any concerns and we'll advise on the best option or arrange a 4x4 alternative for part of the route.
What should I wear for a camel trek? +
Loose, breathable clothing, closed shoes, and a scarf or hat for sun and sand protection. Full detail in our Sahara packing guide.
Can I combine camel trekking with a luxury camp stay? +
Yes, nearly every guest combines a sunset trek with an overnight in one of our luxury desert camps, followed by a sunrise trek back.
