Inside a Luxury Desert Camp Experience in Erg Chebbi

Arrival at Camp

Most guests arrive at a luxury desert camp by camel, timed so the last stretch of the trek coincides with sunset. As you crest the final dune, the camp appears below — a cluster of tents around a central fire pit, usually with lanterns already lit. Staff greet you with a tray of mint tea, poured from height in the traditional style, along with dates, almonds, and fresh bread while your tent is prepared.

Tents themselves range from simple traditional Berber-style canvas tents with shared washroom facilities, to deluxe en-suite tents with real beds and private bathrooms, set further into the high dunes for more privacy and darker skies.

Dinner Around the Fire

Dinner is the social heart of a camp night. Guests and staff sit together around the fire while a tagine — often chicken or vegetable, slow-cooked in the traditional clay pot — is served alongside fresh bread. It's common for camp staff to bring out drums after the meal, and it's not unusual for the evening to turn into an impromptu singalong, with guests invited to join in on the rhythm even if they don't know the words.

Stargazing After Dark

Once the fire dies down and lanterns are dimmed, the desert sky takes over. With no light pollution for miles, the Milky Way is visible on clear, moonless nights, and shooting stars are common enough that most guests see at least one. Guides are usually happy to point out constellations or share basic desert navigation by the stars if you ask.

Morning in the Dunes

Camp mornings start early, before sunrise, with a quiet walk or short trek to a nearby high dune to watch the light change over Erg Chebbi. Breakfast — bread, olive oil, honey, and Moroccan pancakes with more mint tea — follows back at camp, before the return trek or 4x4 transfer to Merzouga.

Choosing a Camp Style

If an authentic, low-key evening with a Berber family camp appeals to you, the traditional camp style is the better fit. If you'd prefer a private bathroom and more space, especially for a honeymoon or anniversary night, a deluxe camp further into the dunes is worth the small extra distance. Either way, dinner, tea, and the night sky are shared experiences at both camp types.

Is it cold at night in the desert camp? +
Evenings can be cool, particularly from November to February. Tents are equipped with warm blankets, and layering your clothing is recommended.

Yes, multi-night stays can be arranged as part of a longer private Sahara tour — message us with your dates and we'll plan the route around it.
